The Spiritual Leadership Model (SLM) measures the individual’s current developmental status and his progress in developing two intrinsic qualifications or prerequisites for leadership:
- Calling & Preparation
To leadership by God (Rom 12:8) and commitment to a process characterized by increasing self-knowledge and continuous development towards spiritual maturity (Eph. 4:12-13). This involves developing and empowering the leader for engagement into ministry and service. This early discipleship includes connection into fellowship communities, identifying the ministry contexts for exercising spiritual gifts and helping to assure he thrives. The ultimate aim is preparation and testing for selection as a candidate for leadership. - Character Development
An essential top priority for developing leaders is seeking character qualities modeled by the Lord Jesus, the Apostle Paul and other biblical leaders (1 Tim. 3 & Titus 1:6-9). Development of “self” or one’s inner life and relationship with Christ are foundational prerequisites for leadership in the Church.
The SLM also measures the growing leader’s competencies and capacities expressed in five critical areas of leadership expression:
Evidence of Character, Vision & Determination (Matt. 23:10, 1 Cor. 11:1, Phil. 3:17) |
Moving People Where God Wants Them (Matt. 6:10) |
Preparing People for Service through Discovery, Growth, Renewal, and Personal Transformations (Eph. 4:12) |
Submission and Response in Love to the Interests of those Led (Matt. 20:26-27, 1 Cor. 10:33, Gal. 5:13, Phil. 2:4, 1 Pet. 3:13, 5:2-3) |
A Bias for Action & Results that Honor God (Matt. 5:16, Acts 5:38-39) |
