Our Name

Our name is derived from the Acts 18:24-28 account of an accomplished man who was prepared to make a great impact for the Kingdom. Apollos’ leadership competencies were refined by intentional discipleship and mentoring by Aquila and Priscilla, two mature believers who helped him become a more effective servant leader in the First Century Church. They, like Paul and Timothy and Titus, Moses and Joshua and many other biblical examples, stepped alongside their protégés to prepare them for their roles in advancing the Kingdom. Amongst Apollos’ giftings and talents:

  • Apollos was “an eloquent man.” The Greek word translated “eloquent” is logios which is normally translated “words,” implying he was learned. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt one of the most important educational and cultural centers in the world.
  • Apollos was “mighty in the scriptures.” The Greek word “mighty” is translated “power” or “powerful.” He obviously devoted his life to a careful and prayerful study of the word of God.
  • Apollos was “instructed in the way of the Lord,” and “teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus,” but apparently was “acquainted only with the baptism of John.” He was devoted to telling men of the saving power of Jesus Christ, but his teaching was incomplete. Aquila and his wife Priscilla heard him speaking at the church in Ephesus. They took him aside and provided him with more accurate doctrinal teaching. This correction by Aquila and Priscilla assured that Apollos would be using his passion and skills to speak “accurately,” enhancing his effectiveness as a servant of God. Being highly recommended by the Ephesians, Apollos later went to Achaia, especially to Corinth where he was very effective in representing the claims of Christ to the Jews.
  • Apollos was “fervent in spirit.” The Greek word “fervent” means that he was on fire for the Lord.
  • Apollos “began to speak out boldly in the synagogue.” He was a man of courage.

Like the mentoring Apollos received from Aquila and Priscilla, there are times when many passionate and dedicated servants of God can use help to become more effective in their ministries. Apollos Leadership strives to facilitate these interactions between servant leaders and is dedicated to developing stronger leadership competencies and character within the Body of Christ.
